I've been adopted

I know it's strange but for those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, here's the backstory:

Almost all of the locals on the island own dogs; it's their version of home security.  However, not all of them treat their dogs well.

At the beginning of our road there is a local Nevsian couple and I've noticed that they have a small black and brown dog in their yard.  After a month of driving past their yard I noticed that she seemed to be able to come and go as she pleased, through several holes in the fence.  After speaking with our neighbors I found out that her name is 'Bones' and she is a stray dog that just stuck around.  She was obviously not being fed and after only a little while I couldn't bring myself to just drive by her.  I started bringing her scraps from Kris and I and even from the restaraunt that I am working at.

It wasn't long until Bones realized where the food was coming from and she went from waiting at the side of the road for us, to sleeping under our car to wait for us each morning.
She hasn't gained any weight in months and Evelyn(my boss at Yachtsman Grill) offerred to give me some de-worming medication for her.  On Monday I gave her the first treatment and later that afternoon I noticed that she had learned that our gate does not latch and she could push her way through it.  She spent the entire day following me back and forth as I did my laundry in one of the other apartment buildings.  By that night she had parked herself on the top of our steps and looked like she was there to stay.

When Kris made it home that evening I gave the news to him softly, that we had just adopted a dog and his response was 'No, Sweetie, I think this dog has adopted you!'. Kris agreed that for the time being we would help to get her healthy and see if our landlord will allow her to stay.

Bones has had all three treatments for worms and today she even had a bath.  Tomorrow I have an appointment with the local vet and she will get a check-up, vaccinations and a pedicure. She is possibly the sweetest dog I have ever seen.  She is very timid and it is obvious that she has been treated badly but I think with a little TLC she will make a great companion.

Everyone, I would like you to meet 'Bones'

Nevis Survival Guide

I have come to strongly believe that the key to survival on Nevis is to have a large selection of recipes........for Happy Hour!  Today the recipe is for Peach Bellinis.  You will need:
  1. Peach Drink Mix (it can be powdered crystals or from concentrate)
  2. One Bottle Champagne
  3. Two cans 7-Up (approx 2 1/2 cups)
  4. 1 1/2 cups Rum (amber or spiced rum is best but white works too)
  5. Sangria (red wine, 7-up, brandy and orange juice)
Make your juice mix like you would normally, except instead of water you will use the 7-Up and Champagne.  Just a word of caution; be careful stirring because the mix will bubble and foam over. This mix will need to be frozen. I put mine in a large ziploc bag.  After it is frozen you will add this to your blender with rum and blend well.  Pour into chilled martini glasses and top with Sangria.  Cheers!!!

Perogies exist on Nevis

I have been having a craving for perogies lately and there was no surprise to me that I couldn't find them in any grocery store here.  I guess no ukrainians live on nevis! So, yesterday I decided to make my own.  It took me all afternoon and into the evening to make 2 batches of perogies(one cheddar and one with sauerkraut) and fresh homemade bread.  I got the dough recipe for the perogies online and the recipe for my bread was given to me by Kate(a med student and wife of another med student in Kris' class).  I had to make a few alterations to the recipes, keeping in mind that my health nut, Kris, won't eat anything that isn't whole wheat.  I made whole wheat bread with oats, seasame seeds and flax seeds and whole wheat perogies.  Last night we got to enjoy the fruit of my labor and we had perogies and sausage for dinner and this morning we enjoyed fresh bread for our toast! Here it is...tah dah!!!!!
