Our welcoming committee!

Kris and I hadn't even stepped foot in the house, when we got back on New Year's Eve, when a group of local kids raided our yard to find out who their new neighbors were.  We are quickly realizing that we are the minority in this little village that we are living in.  Everyone has been very welcoming, but they are all very interested in watching to see what we might be up to!

Anyways, these kids have been back in our yard almost every day since.  They want to know

'who are you?'
'where are you from?'
'how long are you living here?'
'do you know Miss Jean(the lady that owns our house)?'
'do you go to school?'
'are you pregnant?'
'is that your car?'
'do you have any candy?'

And, they LOVE Kris!

Before school started last week, Kris wanted to take the scooter out for a drive to make sure that it was running smoothly.  I stepped out on the deck and could see the hoard of kids playing soccer in the street, just down from our house.  Kris didn't get very far, because these kids had been eyeballing the scooter and they were just waiting for their chance to catch Kris on it.

Kris barely got out of the gate when the kids surrounded him!  And there he sat answering more questions, as all the kids took turns honking the horn!

'is that a motorbike?'
'do you own it?'
'how much did it cost?'
'how fast does it go?'
'what does this do?'
'can you take us for a ride?'

Kris' only saving grace was that it was already getting dark, so he used that as an excuse not to take them....he would have been out there for hours!!

I was lucky enough to grab my camera and get a picture

Poliakiwski Update

I must apologize to everyone for my lack of attention to my blog lately.  I have been a little distracted, which I blame entirely on my pregnancy!  Ha Ha Ha.

But seriously, towards the end of the year Kris and I had some unexpected hiccups to our life here on Nevis(I obviously still haven't learned to expect the unexpected here!).  Nothing major....we just got kicked out of our apartment....thanks a lot Kris!

Well, I guess I have to take some of the blame too.

Anyways, here's what happened...

Towards the end of November I was corresponding with our landlords, who live in the US.  Kris and I had already broke the good news, about our little bundle we are expecting, to all our family and friends, so I thought I would tell them too.  Only they didn't think it was such good news.

Our landlord advised us that he was concerned about the noise from a newborn baby, disturbing the neighbors.  He was worried that he would not be able to rent out other apartments because of this and so he asked us to leave.  Our lease was expiring January 31st and he gave us the option of either staying till the end or we could leave sooner if we like(what a nice guy hey???!!!)

So there we were.....Kris was preparing to write final exams and I was searching for a new place for us to live.  Anywhere else and it may not have been such a concern, but finding quality housing here on a budget is quite the feat.  We spent a week looking at 10-12 different places, all over the island.  One after another we looked at houses/apartments that were improperly constructed or improperly maintained, until........

We found a house in a little village called Barnes Ghaut.
I contacted a real estate developer that I had met, while bartending at Yachtsman grill, and he was trying to rent his mother's house out.  She no longer lives on the island and the house was sitting, ready for us to move in.  It has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, so we will have lots of room for visitors....hint, hint!

We packed up and moved into the house December 1st.  One week flew by and we were then on a plane to Canada, another 3 weeks disappeared and now here we are back home.  It feels great to have a real home to come back to and now it is getting even better as we set up the house and prepare for baby to arrive.

There are still a few kinks....we still don't have internet.  But I will follow up soon with some more stories and photos, I promise.
